What is Nutritional Counseling?
Nutritional Counseling, provided by a Registered Dietitian (RD), can be an important feature of your healthy lifestyle and overall wellness. Nutrition Counseling is a process. It covers a wide range of nutrition needs and can help you to improve your health long term.
Nutrition counseling includes a nutritional evaluation, assessment and development of an appropriate daily eating plan that is designed around your specific needs (i.e. Health concerns, disease states, weight control, allergies, religious beliefs, life-style and other factors).
Your first visit or consultation will involve a “get to know you” session that involves providing and gathering information. After that, a typical counseling session (approx. 45 minutes to 1 hour) includes development and/or modification of a nutritional plan, setting attainable goals, education for you and family members, a review of previous sessions, discussions about what might be new (i.e. Medications, lab results, events) and follow-ups and maintenance visits.
Why Nutrition counseling by a Registered Dietitian (RD) is important?
Many people are surprised by what a healthy balanced daily diet truly is. Often and unfortunately, our sources of information are from food advertising and their claims of “healthy food” can be very misleading.
A Registered Dietitian (RD) is the qualified expert and is there to advise you and help you to separate “fact from fiction.” They look at the whole picture (i.e. a combination of behavioral, environmental, social and genetic factors) and come up with your plan. They can even help you interpret lab test results that may have been ordered and can coordinate your overall health and wellness plan with your family doctor or other practitioners.
